Wagner Expansion Africa
The Wagner Group is a Russian state-funded private military company. Since 2017, the group has expanded its operations across the African continent. Russian leaders use Wagner to gain influence in Africa without using the official Russian army. Wagner provides security to African governments facing local rebellions. In return, these governments give Wagner access to valuable natural resources like gold, diamonds, and uranium. The group operates mainly in the Central African Republic, Mali, Sudan, and Libya. Following the death of its founder Yevgeny Prigozhin in 2023, the Russian defense ministry took direct control of these operations under a new name, the Africa Corps.
Core Context Pillars
Pillar 1
In 2018, the Central African Republic signed a security agreement with Russia. Wagner troops protect the president and fight rebel groups. In exchange, Wagner controls the Ndassima gold mine.
Pillar 2
In 2021, military officers in Mali took over the government. The military leaders expelled French troops and hired Wagner. Wagner forces now fight local armed groups in the northern regions.
Pillar 3
Wagner supports General Khalifa Haftar in eastern Libya, protecting oil fields and military bases. In Sudan, Wagner trades weapons for gold with the Rapid Support Forces during the ongoing civil war.
Pillar 4
In late 2023, the Russian government rebranded Wagner as the Africa Corps. The Russian Ministry of Defense now directly manages these troops. This change gives Moscow formal control over the African mining profits and military contracts.
