The Solar System
Introduction to the Solar System
The Solar System consists of the Sun and everything bound to it by gravity, including the eight planets, dozens of moons, and millions of asteroids and comets. It is located in the Milky Way galaxy.
Classification: Types of Planets
- Terrestrial Planets: Rocky planets with solid surfaces, located closer to the Sun (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars).
- Gas Giants: Massive planets composed mostly of hydrogen and helium (Jupiter, Saturn).
- Ice Giants: Planets containing heavier elements than gas giants, like oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen (Uranus, Neptune).
The Planetary Master Table
| Planet | Key Feature | Moons (Approx) | Rotation Period |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | Smallest & Closest | 0 | 59 Days |
| Venus | Hottest (Greenhouse) | 0 | 243 Days (Clockwise) |
| Earth | Only Life & Water | 1 | 24 Hours |
| Mars | Red Planet (Iron Oxide) | 2 | 24.6 Hours |
| Jupiter | Largest (King) | 95 | 10 Hours |
| Saturn | Ring System | 146 | 10.7 Hours |
| Uranus | Rotates on its side | 28 | 17 Hours |
| Neptune | Windiest Planet | 16 | 16 Hours |
Key Scientific Facts
- The Sun accounts for 99.8% of the total mass of the solar system and produces energy through nuclear fusion (Hydrogen to Helium).
- Venus is the only planet that rotates from East to West (Retrograde rotation).
- Olympus Mons, located on Mars, is the tallest volcano and mountain in the entire solar system.
- The Asteroid Belt is a vast region of space between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter where most asteroids are found.
- Halley’s Comet is the most famous periodic comet, visible from Earth every 75–76 years.
